Those were the printers we had in the data van in the oil field, those things are pretty damn robust, I’d go with the HP

damn it, I missed the scan part, it didn’t do that, but put up with more dust than you can imagine, we had a HP that took 53A ink cartages if that helps

I have also heard that Xerox makes an excellent printer, although I have no direct experience.

I used to always buy HP when it came to printers, especially laser printers, but lately I’ve had mixed results with them. I’ve had much better and consistent results with Brother laser printers the last couple of years.

I have had one of those for years it’s a workhorse and it doesn’t care about generic ink. If you need all in one I would look at Epson for their office machines.

Over the last few years we’ve switched from HP to Xerox where I work they seem to be more reliable. We have a lot of 6605's and they are awesome, but they are color and pricey. Since you just need BW you can get a 3325/DNI for $500. It is 37 ppm so not quite your 40 spec, but these things have fast processors that start printing instantly and long duty cycles to avoid downtime that might make up for it. I haven't tried to fax with one, but scanning works well. Spend the extra $100 on an extended warranty or toner.

Just make sure you choose a laser printer. The consumables will eat you alive otherwise.
